Back Door doesn't open

My back door opens when it feels like it and it's really frustrating. I use it for work and my small parts are in the back. The automatic button is turned off because the side door quit working and it just works better manually now.
So, with the doors unlocked the back door should open when I pull on the latch, but it doesn't always. Oh, I also unplugged the warning indicator inside the back door...a couple years ago. Could that be the problem?
