odometer and fuel gauge not displaying properly

Recently our display with the odometer, temp, and fuel gauge have been not working correctly. The display went out about 2 weeks ago and then came back on and has once again gone out. When the display does come back on, the fuel gauge reads about 1/2 a tank lower than the previous time I drove the van. I know there is no fuel leak. Today when I drove it the display flashed a few times and then stayed off. When I got home, I turned off the van and then restarted it. The display did come back on, but looked like it was about to go back out.
Any ideas what could be causing this problem? Hopefully its not too expensive to fix. Thanks!

Try to run the test mode to see if the cluster is the problem
If you press the odometer reset button and then turn the ignition key to the "on" position and wait for about ten seconds (keep the reset button pressed during these 10 seconds) you should enter the test mode. As you press the trip reset button, your cluster is going to perform several tests (guages, light, etc.) After several tests, you may have a fault error, which is going to be "err". If you get this indication, your cluster needs to be replaced.
2004-2009 nissan quest
I worked on a 2006 Nissan Quest recently with the exact same problem. On the back of the gage cluster there is an electrical plug that wasn't plugged all the way in. I plugged it in but unfortunately it had been loose too long and caused the LCD screen to only partially work. It is not that hard to get to, but a replacement part will have to come to the dealer. Chevy had this problem with the same type of connection, but theirs was on the fuel pump. They have since updated their plug but Nissan hasn't.
2005 Quest Odometer/Fuel Gauge/Thermostat Display Failure
My wife's '05 Quest has 133K miles on it and it just started having the same problem about a month ago. I don't know what I'm going to do but I read in another post that the cluster was replaced with a used one and another persone said that they just disconnected the instrument connection and reconnected it several times to ensure good contact and it worked again. I'm going to give this a shot and see what happens.

Same problem with Odometer/Fuel + more...
My 2004 Quest is suffering the same problem too. It also has deceleration problems. My mechanic said it was probably the computer and would cost a couple of thousand dollars. Not something I can afford for sure. Guess I will have to contact a lawyer. This is a safety issue and should have been a recall for defective design. Any recommendations on who to contact would be appreciated!
Deceleration problems, Odometer and Speedometer problems
I own a 2000 Nissan Quest with approximately 180,000 miles. We had the same problem with the odometer not working, the speed gauge would bounce up and down once we reached 20 miles and it would stall and "choke" randomly like it was not getting gas at around 110,000 miles.
To get to the point my mechanic found out it was the distributor system. Nissan does not sell the distributor cap alone, it comes all together ~$350.00. This fixed the odometer, the speedometer and it continues to run smoothly to date.
Hope it helps.
We are having the same
We are having the same problem (for about two months). We took it to the dealership and they said it was the instrumentation cluster and would take roughly $780 to replace (I'm sure it will be more....the "roughly" quotes are always a hundred bucks short). The van has 67k miles. We're not happy to discover there have been other issues with this cluster.
The van is paid off and we will be selling it soon and will be buying a new vehicle. We had driven the Nissan Rogue, as well as the Subaru Forrester and Mazda CX-7. Having these problems, which other owners have had, and having to pay so much to have it repaired will make our selection of a new vehicle that much easier.
