CD Stuck in factory player...how do I get it out?

illibrium's picture

After never having problems before, my 2004 decided it wouldn't eject my new NIN "Year Zero" CD. It just clicks for a few seconds when I hit eject.

I have the regular factory single disc player. I tried a few things to get it out, but nothing has had any effect.

How do I get it out? The CD will still play, but I'd like to use another CD in there someday.

Problem fixed

I've just fixed this issue on our 04 quest. The problem with it is the cheap plastic they used in the cd player. It can be fixed. I had to remove the cd player completely. Inside the cd player there are white gears. Holding the white gears down is a clear plastic cover being held by one screw. It cracks. When trying to eject the cd, the gears spin but lift off because the clear plastic holding down the gears is cracked. It then flaps making the clicking noise. I glued the clear plastic in several areas and have had zero issues. I can walk you through the steps if needed.

cd fix steps

Thanks for giving me the general idea as to how to fix this.

I just finished repairing my CD player following the posts on this site. The disassembly of the player is a little tricky and not easily explained. The player is removed as a single metal box which houses the circuit board ( green ) and the disc holder/player. The player portion of the unit is connected to the cast aluminum heat sink at the back. These need to stay attached to one another. The plastic silver front needs to be removed. It is just pressed on with little flex tabs on all sides. This has a small circuit board in it and connection for the eject switch. Be careful when you pull it off not to break the switch connections.

Behind the silver face plate are two black items that guide the disc into the player They are just laying on the front with some guide tabs. Remove them and note how they go on. Next remove the front metal face. Take a sharpie and put a dot next to each hole that you remove a screw so you know where to put the back. The front has tabs that slide into the top and sides of the unit so slide the fornt plate as unit out to remove the front. Removing the bottom is similar. Next remove screws on the two sides that are holding the player platform. The back will also have screws holding it to the metal box. There are two longer screws so keep track of where they go.

You will have to unplug the two small bundles of wires on the circuit board to be able to remove the player portion from the main circuit board. (they were beige on mine) The damage on my player was exactly as described by the gent who gave the fix description. The white wheels are located near the rear of the unit and the clear plastic keeper was broken at the point where it is screwed to the frame. I used a silicon type sealant and a tooth pick to layer a very precise bead of sealant from the edge of the clear plastic to the metal frame beneath. I used silicon because I thought it would withstand vibration and heat better than other glues. Let the silicon set up completely and then carefull reassemble the unit and connecting it to the power source and see if you can get the disc out. I was successful and now that the disc has been removed I will wait for 24 hours to make sure the silicon has fully cured. I did test the player with one new disc insertion and ejection and it works and plays great.

Getting the console off is a little tricky so follow the diagrams and notes and start at the black band at the bottom held on with two plug fasteners. This have to be pulled out carefully and then the trim will follow. The drivers side has a small trim section that can be removed by gently pulling out(towards the gas pedal. It also has to be pulled toward the driver seat. the dash beneath the comparment trays below the steering wheel needs to have the bottom released by taking out two screws. Removing the glove box (7 screws) was also helpful to be able to the remove the passenger side of the console. The slideing ash type tray has to be removed. this is done by prying out the two small trim pieces on either side of it and taking the two screws out. There are two screws at the very top of the console and two at the very bottom. There are several tabs with metal pressure brackets along each side of the console so just look in side the console and carefully pry it off. The player is bolted in with four bolts and then connected with four wire bundles and the antenna wire. These bundles have pressure tabs the have to be disengaged in order to remove them. When you put them back look closely at the electrical pin arrangement so they are replaced properly.

This is a very detailed description of how I made the repair. It is not overly complicated but you do need to be methodical and note where and how things go back together. Taking a number of digital pictures at each step with your phone or camera may help you retrace your path.

This is more information than I started with and did it successfully. I will not be answering any questions as I do not frequent this site and will only return should I need more repair help. Best of Luck

We have a 2005 Nissan Quest and have the same problem. when we try to eject the CD it just makes a clicking noise. we have been driving with the same CD in for over a year now. It will play but wont come out. Has anyone come up with a way to get the CD out? Has anyone heard of any kind of recall or concessions by the dealers?

2004 Nissan Quest stuck CD

Same problem here. CD stuck, makes clicking noise. Tried pulling the fuse to see if it would reset, butter knife, tape, etc., but it will not come out. I was not thrilled with the interior to begin with, and I guess tearing the dash apart is not going to be a cakewalk. Might check into buying an adapter for the ipod and use it instead. Dealers probably salivate when you walk in with this problem.$$$

RE_Stuck CD in factory player

My three year old daughter decided to load six CDs into the single disc player in my 2001. I had to remove the CD player from the dash and pop the top off of it to pull them out. The CDs were directly under the top cover and it comes off with out having to do alot of major dissassembing. The Radio/CD player is easily accessible on the 2001 but I am not sure about the 2004. In the 2001 GLE you just have to remove the trim piece around the the radio and heater controls to get to the mounting screws for the radio. The whole process took me about 15 to 20 minutes.

CD Stuck in factory player

I also have this exact problem. I brought the car to dealership and they said it was the CD since it was homemade. I personally think that's bogus as I also have a crapping 2000 Ford Focus and these CDs NEVER get stuck in it. They tried to get it out but couldn't and suggested I buy a replacement at audio place or get a refurbished one from them for a couple hundred bucks that would take 6 weeks to get. I went to car stereo place and they couldn't find anything to fit into console. A friend suggested to use ipod with connection instead of CD player. This really ticks me off as the radio stinks!!!

2006 CD stuck

My CD is stuck also...Obvious a rotten #@$##!! problem with these units and Nissan can drop dead if they think I will spend $100 on their stupid CD player to replace it and have the same problem a few years later - bad design and bad publicity for them. Still digging but I will find a way around it with someothers player.

Year Zero

Actually, the problem may be the disc, and not your player. I've talked to two people who have noticed issues with putting the disc into or removing it from drives.

If you have it somewhere you can see it, you may notice that when warm, it turns white, and when cooled it will turn black. I think there is some kind of coating on the label, making the disc a bit thicker than most of the CDs I've used.

Good luck!

I got it out....

I used the instructions for dismantling the console (off this site) to expose the front of the CD player. I left the CD player installed and only took its face plate off. I saw that inside, underneath the assembly that holds the CD, there was a white gear that was trying to turn another gear but it was just stripping out and going over it. I stuck my hand in there and held it in place while "pressing" eject and the CD came out. (To eject with the face plate off, you have to gently short the two leftmost pins in the female connector where the faceplate circuitry normally connects to. Any piece of metal will do--I used a screwdriver.) I put in another CD while it was still disassembled and it clicked and it still had the problem. I retrieved it again and put everything back together. Now I just need to find a place to get a new CD player, or remember not to put anything in there again--stupid CD player.

Warranty?

Is your Quest out of warranty? The basic coverage now goes to 60,000 miles. This should be covered.

mclowejr's picture

Does the warranty cover the cd player?

Does anyone know if the 60,000 mile warranty covers the radio/CD player. I am having the same problem with my cd player. I called the nissan dealer. They said they only replace the entire unit (quoted over a $1,000 dollars) and the warranty was good for 3 years/35,000 miles. Perhaps the salesman didn't realize this is a 2004 with the extended warranty?

Thanks.

yes

Yes, the warranty covers the radio/CD. My CD player was replaced two months ago. Same issue as the others, CD would not eject. Warranty covered parts and labor. Your salesman needs to check it out, he is wrong.

Hi, Can you send the address from dealer you bring the car go there to fix, thanks.

You guys think you have

You guys think you have problems, my 2004 SL just got the Wiggles CD stuck in it. Luckily the dealer is close by so we can get it removed. Bad part is that it is Bankston Nissan in Lewisville, TX. Horrible service! Ill drive up the road to another dealer.

Bankston is so lousy. (insert gee Nebsky, how lousy) Well thanks for asking. So lousy that when they charged me 36.00 to change the rear window wiper they gave me a damaged one and then told me that I was the one who damaged it and they wont replace it.

Nice guys huh.
