Want to buy a minivan - should i go for a 2009 Quest SE?

estabulla's picture

We had a 2004 SE - got totaled in an accident. We are out for looking for a new minivan again. I like the 2009 SE - nice updates to the model. Question is, there is a rumor that it is the last year and Nissan is planning to cancel the model or redesign it completely. So is it worth investing in one? or should we look at other models?

Thanks in advance.

If you can find a

(This comment is posted in response to CHIQuest's recommendation that a potential Quest owner look at a crossover/SUV isntead. For some reason, it's not threading properly on my computer, so I figured I'd better explain what I'm talking about...)

If you can find a crossover/SUV with the same interior room as a Quest, I'd like to know what vehicle you're looking at. The Quest has 147 cubic feet behind the front seats; the largest SUV/crossover I could find that would still fit in my garage (i.e., less than 205" long) is the Buick Enclave, with only 115 cubic feet behind the front seats (IF you can find a bench seat second row model... the bucket seat second row seems to be the only one I can find, and it has 6 fewer cubic feet, according to the Buick dealer).

I'd prefer not to have to drive a van, but I have a comic book store and once a week we need to pick up 800 to 1000 pounds of comics that can take up anywhere from 90 to 125 cubic feet of space. That means a van is a necessity for me. I've owned a 2005 Odyssey and a 2008 Sienna before buying the 2009 Quest; minor glitches notwithstanding, the Quest is worlds better than either the Odyssey or the Sienna.

You will find the 09 to be more reliable

For the 07 MY they made significant improvements and it has shown up in reliability. I don't think you should steer away from the Quest just because it is the end of the line. If you can get a good deal, go for it. It is likely to be just as solid and reliable as a Honda or Toyota, but could cost you thousands less.

If you care about handling?

I heard the handling on Odyssey and Sienna is not as good as the Quest, and one comment I saw about the Sienna is that the driving is consider boring even as a minivan, so you can tell the handling sucks. I have a 2008 Quest SE and really loves it. I changed to Infiniti 19" rims and handling is super, so I wouldn't trade it for Odyssey or Sienna if I have to do it all over again.

Thanks

Re; If you care about handling?

handling? In a 17 foot long, 4300 pound vehicle?

I'll have to remember that when I shop my next minivan. Handling over Reliability, features, durability, resale value.

I will agree that the only minivan that equaled the Quest's driving dynamics is the Odyssey. The Sienna may be boring but it works.

I'm out.

Yeah, Nissan is cancelling the Quest at least in it's current minivan configuration. Not to start a flame here, but if I had it to do over again, I'd go with the Honda. We've had just too many issues with our 04. We haven't had any MAJOR issues (yet), but a lot of little quirks adds up fast. I know several people who have the Odyssey and they are very happy with its reliability.

Re: I'm out.

I've had the same experience as you. Nothing major, although I did just replace the front control arms. Found out the bushings are not serviceable. The only way to fix it is replace the entire control arm which is not cheap.

I would look at the Odyssey or Sienna.

2009?

We love our '04 and if we had it to do again would get an 09.
Not sure either about '10 models, noticed that even the C&D magazine didn't even list Quest.
Nissan isn't sure what they are going to do as their plans with the cars being made in this plant have all been tossed up in the air due to the current auto conditions.
Last I read/heard was that there would be a new Quest made in Japan. Who knows....

Tough call. The plan is for Nissan to continue selling the 2009 Quest through the fall. No announcements yet for a 2010 model.

minivan era has come to an

minivan era has come to an end, if I were you I'll go for a crossover (nicer, sportier, same int space) and you won't feel embaraced while you drive it.
I just got rid of my 06 quest and I got myself a Mazda CX-9 wich is a great crossover and less expensive than the 09 quest.

By the way...

Most prob this is my last post in this forum, so I would like to take the time to say thank you to all members for all the help you gave me in the past 3 years for my 06 quest.

Have a happy life.

I beg to differ. Even the

I beg to differ. Even the biggest "crossovers" do not come close to a minivan in interior space. Mazda CX-9 is a roomy crossover, but I would bet my paycheck that its capacity with all of the seats down is significantly less than that of an 06 Nissan Quest.

Why should anyone feel embarrassed to drive a minivan? They are practical, versatile vehicles, that illustrate how intelligent you are. You should be proud to drive a minivan.

Thank you all for your comments. We did end up buying an 09. Love it so far. A little sad that it the model is being discontinued - but glad that i got one of the most under appreciated minivans but a lovely unit nonetheless.

good luck, considering all

good luck, considering all the minor issues with the '05 i've had, i would have steered clear.
