License Plate Light Removal

I am trying to remove the bulbs for the license plate and exchange them for LED's. Does anyone know the easiest way to do this? I've done it once with modifying a wrench to get it to fit under the liftgate release, but this is very difficult. Can you remove that piece of plastic to get to the bulbs and tailgate handle better?

Yes, you can remove the

Yes, you can remove the piece, but it is attached with a pair of bolts. You have to remove the interior lower trim on the tailgate door and then two bolts are accessible. Remove the bolts and then gently pry off the piece as there are two plastic retainers. I unfortunately know how to do this because I tried to pry off originally to fix my burned out light and I broke that plastic portion. Trust me, it is EXPENSIVE to replace.
